Friday 18 November Romanticism introduction

Due today: vocabulary 5In class: introductory material on Romanticism (see copy of handout below)

Homework: please memorize the qualities of Romanticism. We'll be working with this material for at least eight weeks. Quick quiz Monday, where I'll ask you to write out the qualities.

Age of Reason: Descartes: “Cogito, ergo sum” (I think, therefore I exist)
Age of Romanticism: Rousseau: “Exister, pour nous,c’est sentir” (For us, to exist is to feel.)

An Age of Passion
Rebellion
Individuality
Imagination
Intuition
Idealism
Creativity

Plato described humans as a careful balance of reason, passions and appetites, with reason as the guide. The Age of Reason elevated reason, but perhaps suppressed passions too much. For some, the emphasis on reason had gotten out of balance with the rest of human nature.

Qualities of Romanticism (this is what needs to be memorized by Monday)

1. Love of Nature
2. Idealization of rural living
3. Faith in Common People
4. Emphasis on freedom and individualism
5. Spontaneity, intuition, feeling, imagination, wonder
6. Passionate individual religiosity
7. Life after death
8. Organic view of the World
