Monday 14 November: Speech Virginia Convention analsyis

Due today: Franklin and the Gout responses. These were on Thursday's blog only. If you misplaced the textual material, it is on the blog as well.

In class: we'll read and watch Patrick Henry's Speech to the Virginia Convention. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvJrSdr34co

Please see Thursday 10 November's blog if you lost your handouts. We'll start breaking down the speech into the logos, ethos and pathos criteria. Note also these rhetorical devices: anaphora, epistrophe and parallelism. (definitions and examples on the handout and Thursday's blog)

REMINDERS: On Wednesday 16 November, you will have a test. It will consist of the following list, for which you will simply define these terms: logos, ethos, pathos, anaphora, epistrophe, parallelism, aphorism, satire and almanac. Make sure you can give three techniques used in a persuasive argument that employs logos, ethos and pathos. That’s the whole quiz; so you can write out the responses ahead to familiarize yourself, although you won’t have access during the test.

On Thursday 17 November, you will turn in your Speech to the Virginia Convention responses. Again, take your time. This will count as a paper grade.

On Friday 18 November, you will turn in vocabulary 5
