Your homework was to have written an introduction only to a critical lens essay based upon the quote given by Herodotus. These should all be posted now, either by you or me, if you had trouble. It is homework grade. You have a 0, if you have not completed the assignment, a 100 if you included a lead sentence, the inclusion of the quote with the author, an accurate paraphrase, two works of literature with their accompanying genres, titles and authors and a clear thesis statement, which says how particular literary elements within these works support the quote.
HOMEWORK FOR MONDAY: Please write a second critical lens and post.
Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle- Martin Luther King
Some notes on today's class: First and formost, it's important to stay focused and learn from each other.
1. With the exception of Leon, who joined the class later, everyone must select from material we covered since September. (Sorry, no Sophocles, Kerri ).
2. Make sure you have three works down flawlessly, including the correct genre, author and title
3. Support, refute or challenge the quote. Avoid it is agreeable or even one may agree with...
4. quotations for essays, short stories and poems; underline for plays and novels
5. avoid contractions
6 there / their- do not mess that up!
7. avoid redundancies...say it once and say it clearly
8. avoid a conversational tone- no basically
9. check your spelling, punctuation and grammar
10. make sure if you are using a singular subject, you continue to reference it with a singular pronoun ie. man / his people / they.....one / he or she someone / he or she
11. Try to start with a hook sentence. Take a look at Julie's for a good example.
12. If you are using the essays "Nature" or "Self-Reliance" by Emerson or Thoreau's essay "Walden", note that you are limited to talking about theme, tone and point-of-view, the latter here being third person for Emerson with his preacher tone, whilst Thoreau is first person. Non-fiction works do not have characters or plot.
13. How you set up your introduction is what should be in the body.
14. The conclusion should not repeat the introduction, including the whole title / quote/ authors, but should be an original / universal idea.
15. Never say I.
Post these by 6 on Sunday and I will try to make any adjustments in the reply section. QUESTIONS? ASK!

The great Martin Luther King Jr. once stated the quote, "Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle." It is easy to agree with this quote. It explains that difficult things that the human race want to accomplish dont happen by luck or fluke, but by hard work, fight, or sum type of inevitable suffering. Examples of this quote exist is works of literature such as Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, and The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne.
(do not editorialize by saying great)
DeleteMartin Luther King Jr once stated (don't say quote; he's not quoting himself), Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle." (Do not say it is easy to agree with!!!- stop talking with Ashley and pay attention.)In other words, difficult things that people wish to accomplish do not (never use any contractions!)happen by luck or fluke, but by hard work a fight or some type of inevitable suffering. This is supported through characterization and plot in Shakespeare's play Hamlet and Hawthorne's Romantic novel The Scarlet Letter.

ReplyDeleteMartin Luther king said "Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle." Martin Luther King is saying that change isn’t achieved easily but is achieved though hard work and struggles. Two works of literature that supports this quote are “Hamlet” a play by William Shakespeare, and “The Scarlet Letter” a novel by Nathanial Hawthorne. Both authors develop their work through characterizing in which change occurs through struggle and hard work.
Martin Luther King (note capital) said, "Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle." (Do not repeat the name; that's filler.) What he is saying (or you could use a synonym, such as what the Civil Rights Leader is saying) is that (try to find a phrase or synonym to avoid using words in the quote; some suggestions: advances, developments, innovations, revolution, shifts, transformations)is not (avoid contractions) achieved easily,(missed comma)but is (find a synomym for achieved, as you already used it; suggestions: reached, accomplished, realized) through hard work and struggle (do not need the s). Two works of literature that support (no s) (avoid saying quote..how about his words) are the play Hamlet (underline, not quotes)by William Shakespeare and the Romantic novel The Scarlet Letter (again underline) by Nathanial Hawthorned. Both authors develop this (theme / idea) through characterizing change through struggle and hard work.
DeleteMartin Luther King once said that "Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle." In essence he is saying that nothing will just 'change inevitably', one has to work in order to make things happen. This quote is supported by both the play _Hamlet_ by William Shakespeare and the novel _The Scarlet Letter_ by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Both authors establish this theme with plot and characterization.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I wonder how many people will use The Scarlet Letter and Hamlet...
yeah, it's almost a cliche. Too bad.

In essence, (need a comma) he is saying that nothing will (avoid using words from the quote in your paraphrase; think of synonyms and even phrases. I gave Aaron a couple of ideas; take a look at his); (you are joining two sentences; use a semi-colon here)one has to work in order to make things happen. This quote (how about: King's words) is (are) supported by both the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare and the Romantic (not necessary, but more precise)novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Think about a lead in / hook sentence. Good work.

“Change does not roll in on the wheels on inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle,” by Martin Luther King means that change will not occur without action from those who wish to make the desired revisions. This quote can be proven true through the two pieces of literature Hamlet, a play by William Shakespeare and The Scarlet Letter, a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Both authors use the literary element s of characterization and plot to support the idea that change will not happen without hard work and perseverance.

ReplyDelete"Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle," as stated (you need a verb) by Martin Luther King, means that (you need to use a synonym or phrase, rather than repeat a word used in the quote; look at my response to Aaron for suggestions) will not occur without actin from those who wish to make the desired revisions. (nicely phrased!) This quote (that's correct; however, consider these words) can be proven true through two pieces of literature: (you need a colon here- careful) Hamlet, a play by William Shakespeare and The Scarlet Letter, a Romantic (not necessary, but more precise) novel by Nathanial Hawthorne. Both authors use the literary elements of characterization and plot to support the idea that change will not happen without hard work and peseverance.

ReplyDeleteMartin Luther King once said, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” In other words this means that one cannot just sit around and do absolutely nothing, he or she has to work and exert effort in order to bring about change. This quote can be supported by two pieces of literature. The plot in the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare and the characterization of Hester Prynne in the fiction novel, The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, connect with this quote.

(find a synonym for change; avoid using words that are in the quote with your paraphrase; see suggestions under Aaron's comments) This quote (correct, but consider: these words cand be supported by two pieces of literature: (you need a colon here) the plot in William Shakespeare's Hamlet and the characterization of Hester Prynne in the Romantic novel (novel's are always fiction, so redunant and while not necessary to say Romantic, it is more exact)The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
nice work, Ashley
Martin Luther King once stated that, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” In essence this quote means that a change can’t take place unless a person is willing to go through a continuous struggle make a change happen. Two works of literature that supports this quote is the novel "The Scarlet Letter”, by Nathaniel Hawthorne and the play "Hamlet", by William Shakespeare. Each author expresses the idea of the quote through plot and characterization.

In essence, (need a comma) this quote (that is correct, but suggest these words) mean that change (find a synonym or phrase; avoid using words in the quote in your paraphrase) can't (no contractions) take place unless a person is willing to go through a continuous struggle [to] make a change happen. (you actually did not explain King's words, but only circled in on what he said. Again, your interpretation of the quote should be just that: yours. Use your words. It is fine to stretch it out to several sentences, if necessary) Two works of literature that support (no s; careful) these words are (suject /verb agreement- careful) are the Romantic novel The Scarlet Letter (underline the novel, no quotes) by Nathaniel Hawthorne adn the play Hamlet (underline, no quotes) by William Shakespeare. ReplyDeleteMartin Luther King had once said that "change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle." By which he is stating that change won't happen in a random hour, but must be striven and bled for. The literary works of William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, and the romantic novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. the Characterization and plot of these works push forward this idea of change through pain.

(read the following carefully) Two literary works that support King's words are the Romantic novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. This is accomplished through characterization (no captital c) and plot, where change is accomplished through pain.
careful to proof read.
Martin Luther King once said “ Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” In essence one who has went through a struggle in life has experienced a change in their life. This quote can be proven accurate by two works of literature. The characterization of Hester Prynne in The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and the plot in the short story Franklin and the Gout by Benjamin Franklin. Each character has experienced a struggle in their life that has caused them to make a change. One has to go through a struggle in order to experience a change.

Necessary change does not simply come with time, it takes work to start a revolution. Martin Luther King Jr. supports this philosophy with his quote, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” In other words this means, If you want something to change, you need to work for it yourself. This Doctrine can be validated by, Hamlet, a tragic play written by William Shakespeare, and The Scarlet Letter, a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Both authors use figurative language, such as, characterization to truly personify the protagonists, and their journeys to alter their destiny.

DeleteNecessary change does not simply come with time; (note the semi colon)it takes work to start a revolution. Martin Luther King, Jr. supported (past tense) this philosophy when he said (he didn't quote himself,"Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle." In other words, (delete the this means; it's redundant), if (lower case) one (keep neutral) wants something to change (choose a synonym; avoid words that are in the quote)one needs to ? (need powerful words that reflect struggle- accept that transformations- personal or social- usually come with suffering.)This doctrine (lower case) is validated (good verb choice) in William Shakespeare's tragic play Hamlet and the Romantic (not necessary, but exact) novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The protagonists and plots developed by both authors reflect the theme of struggle as they alter their lives.
your last sentence was confusing: figurative language refers to devices, such a personification, metaphors, oxymorons, etc. To flesh out the characters, you can argue that the authors used these techniques, as in Hester personified sin, as exemplified through the embroidered A- but more details and Hamlet personified the suffering, tormented, guilt-ridden son. Careful not to get bogged down with plot summary. Be very specific.

ReplyDelete"Men are at the mercy of all events and cannot control them". This quote by Herodotus states that sometimes things happen in life that we cannot do anything to change, in a word, fate. The quote is highly agreeable for humanity rests in the hands of a changing spiral of events in which absolutely no one has any control over anything. A great example of this can be found in both Night, by Elie Wiesel, and Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. From Macbeth's fortune, given to him by the witches, to young Elie's experience in Auschwitz. Humanity needs fate to keep order and remind us that no man or woman has complete and total power.

ReplyDeleteMartin Luther King once said, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” In essence, change doesn't happen by merely sitting around waiting for it, but by actually putting effort into makign a change even if one must go through trials and tribulations. This critical lens is easy to agree with. This critical lens is evident through the characterization of Hester Prynne in the Scarlet Letter, a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and also through the plot of Hamlet, a play by Shakespeare.

Martin Luther King once said,"Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continous struggle." What Dr.Martin Luther King was trying was that change does not happen when you sit there and wait for something to happen, change will only happen during a struggle. Dr.Kings words can be proven through two pieces of literature The Gout by Benjamin Franklin and The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. These pieces of literature support this qoute because both Hester Prynne and Benjamin Franklin both faced struggles during their life that would change their lives.

ReplyDeleteChange does not occur while man is sitting in his home. Man must abandon his comfortable life to break away from old traditions. In order to alter history, man will withstand pain and deal with conflict. Through characterization of Hester Prynne and Hamlet, the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorn and the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare support the idea that one must fight for change.

Martin Luther King once said, “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” In other words, this quote means that one cannot sit around and wait for change to occur at any time, change will only emerge if an individual is willing to go through a series of continuous struggle in order to make that change happen now. Martin Luther King once said that “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” In other words, change cannot be achieved if one does not go through the struggle to obtain it. This idea is expressed in the fiction short story “Franklin and the Gout” by Benjamin Franklin and the romantic novel “Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Both works of literature support the quote with the literary element of characterization; describing that one can only achieve through challenge.

ReplyDeleteOften times for humanity if something is not to our liking, we often make alteration to it to satisfy our taste. Martin Luther King Jr., a well known man had once stated “Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.” In other words modifications do not occur to those who do not put effort into it. Struggles and failure will always happen but adjustments are made when people attempt to do it. Two great pieces of literature that can prove this point are the play Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, and the novel The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In these two novels the authors uses many literary elements such as characterization, plot, and imagery to perfect the protagonists.
